The authorities did not stop at making arrests alone; they collaborated with the Electric Power Bureau to sever the electricity supply to 38 commercial establishments identified as hotspots for online gambling operations. By taking this additional step, the police hoped to disrupt the activities of these illicit gambling hubs.
Upon examining the nature of the cases, it was found that the majority of them, precisely 154, were investigated under Section 4(1)(C) of the Gambling Act 1953, which specifically addresses offenses related to internet gambling.
Moreover, 35 cases were subjected to thorough investigations and subsequent prosecution under Section 4A(a) of the Gambling Act 1953, pertaining to unlawful underground casinos.
Lastly, the authorities scrutinized four cases under Section 4(1)(g) of the Gambling Act 1953, which pertains to the operation of internet gambling top-up centers.
Out of the total 246 suspects apprehended, charges have already been filed against 172 individuals, while the cases involving others are currently under review and being processed by law enforcement.
Reiterating the commitment of the Kuching Police District, Chief Asmond emphasized that the crackdown on online gambling, as well as other forms of gambling, will persist. He urged the public to come forward with any information that could assist the authorities in their ongoing efforts to combat these illegal activities.
The fight against online gambling continues to be a priority for law enforcement agencies, as they recognize the detrimental impact it has on individuals and communities alike. By apprehending the individuals involved and diligently investigating the cases, the Kuching Police District is sending a strong message that such activities will not be tolerated within their jurisdiction.
As the investigations progress and charges are brought against the perpetrators, it is hoped that these efforts will serve as a deterrent and contribute to the eradication of online gambling in Kuching, fostering a safer and more secure environment for residents and visitors alike.
