Jay Chou, the Taiwanese singer-songwriter and actor, has found himself embroiled in controversy after a netizen accused him of being a veteran gambler. The news, which broke on social media on April 6, has been making waves online ever since.
According to the whistleblower, Chou lost 47 million Taiwan dollars (approximately 10.59 million yuan) in a single night at a casino in Singapore during one of his concerts. Chou reportedly went to other casinos and ended up losing a total of 100 million Taiwan dollars (about 22.55 million yuan) during his stay in the city-state.
The whistleblower also claimed that Chou’s gambling habit had affected his earnings. The singer reportedly earned NT$30 million for his concert in Singapore but lost NT$70 million in total during his stay.
Chou has been open about his love for gambling in the past. During an interview while filming “The Green Hornet,” Chou admitted to going to a casino for a day or two before starting work. The singer reportedly lost 1 million US dollars (about 7 million yuan) in an American casino at that time.
While Chou’s income and status in the entertainment industry suggest that he can pay off his gambling debts, some netizens have speculated that his recent flurry of concerts is an attempt to pay off his debts. Chou has held 19 confirmed concerts this year, and some netizens estimate that he may hold up to 50 concerts in total.
However, rumors have circulated that Chou’s investment failures and debts may have contributed to his gambling habit. Some netizens have claimed that Chou’s mother’s company, Superstar Legend, failed to go public three times and had a debt ratio of 1.14 times. Chou reportedly lost more than 100 million yuan in investment due to the company’s frozen resources.
Furthermore, rumors have circulated that Chou’s wife, Kunling, has also suffered losses in investment. While the whistleblower did not release any substantive evidence, some netizens have speculated that Kunling’s lack of business acumen may have contributed to the couple’s financial troubles.
The news of Chou’s gambling habit has stirred up a lot of discussion online. Many netizens have expressed their disappointment and surprise at Chou’s behavior, with some even calling for the singer to seek help for his addiction. Others have defended Chou, arguing that he has the right to spend his money as he sees fit.
For now, it remains to be seen how Chou will respond to the accusations. Whether he will address the issue publicly or choose to remain silent, his reputation is sure to take a hit from the recent news.
