KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has initiated an investigation following claims that the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition utilized funds from gambling activities to finance its 15th general election campaign (GE15). The MACC has confirmed the receipt of documents related to a report filed, which has prompted a comprehensive examination into the matter.
Speaking to The Star, Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hashim, the senior director of investigation at MACC, stated that the probe will encompass various aspects, including the identification and scrutiny of the companies mentioned in the report. He emphasized the agency’s commitment to conducting a thorough investigation.
The report, filed on May 30, raised concerns about PN allegedly receiving funds from gaming companies that were purportedly directed towards electoral purposes. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim acknowledged the claims and confirmed that ongoing investigations were underway to ascertain the veracity of these allegations.
In response to the accusations, Anwar Ibrahim extended an invitation to PN to take legal action against his statements while urging them to interpret his remarks in their entirety. He maintained that the claims were not baseless and reiterated the ongoing efforts to probe the coalition’s alleged receipt of funds from gaming entities.
As part of its measures, the MACC had previously frozen and seized several bank accounts, including those affiliated with PN’s Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia. These actions were executed under the provisions of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorist Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
The investigation into the alleged utilization of gambling funds for the GE15 campaign marks a significant development in the Malaysian political landscape.
