Kota Kinabalu, 5th July 2023 – In a major crackdown, the police in Sabah successfully disrupted an online gambling syndicate that had established a call center base across three rented units in a shopping mall. This operation, which aimed at targeting foreign markets and recruiting gamblers for online betting, resulted in the apprehension of 39 individuals, including locals, Chinese, and Indonesians.
The Sabah Police Chief, Datuk Zhao Didi Kun, revealed that the police conducted the assault at 12:15 pm yesterday, based on actionable intelligence. The three units, situated on the 7th floor of the shopping mall near Penang Bangjie Road, were identified as the hub of the illegal online gambling activities.

Chief Zhao disclosed that the syndicate had been targeting gamblers in various foreign countries. To facilitate their operations, the group had employed a significant number of customer service staff, both local and foreign, to handle interactions with the gamblers. These staff members were enticed by job advertisements on Facebook, offering them a monthly salary of RM1,500.
The seized evidence from the scene of the operation included 74 computers, 38 CPUs, and 22 mobile phones. These confiscated items play a crucial role in building a strong case against the syndicate and gathering evidence of their illegal activities.

The arrested individuals are now in police custody and will face charges related to their involvement in the online gambling syndicate. As investigations continue, it is anticipated that additional charges will be filed, reflecting the gravity of their actions.
